Breast Cancer and Psychotherapy

Breast cancer patients and survivors have a uniquely challenging emotional experience. You may be in despair one day, and filled with optimism the next. You may want your loved ones around you or want very much to be alone. Certain days you might feel strong and decisive, on others you wish someone else would take the reins. All of this is a normal part of the experience.

I was diagnosed and treated for breast cancer in June 2002. I have experienced lumpectomy, mastectomy, chemotherapy, radiation, hormone therapy, and reconstructive surgeries.  I continue to live with the long term effects of the cancer treatments.  I combine my cancer journey with my therapeutic knowledge to offer effective counseling to my clients.  I treat breast cancer patients, survivors, caregivers, families, spouses and friends.

Things we may do in therapy include:

  • Expressing the full range of your feelings, thoughts and emotions without worrying about the impact on your family and friends.
  • Finding effective ways to cope with your shock, anxiety, fear, stress, confusion, anger, guilt, etc.
  • Exploring and resolve thoughts of "why me" or "what did I do to deserve this."
  • Venting your anger, sadness---rant, rave, sob, and everything in between.
  • Sorting through what you want and need from others, and what you don't.
  • Identifying and accept your own needs and let yourself be a priority as you navigate your way through treatment.
  • Making meaning of your experience, what you think and feel about it, how it may influence your perspective, relationships and life.

My office is in Plano, Texas on the campus of St. Andrew United Methodist Church.
